Production on The Batman Part II has resumed with Steven Soderbergh stepping in to direct the final weeks of principal photography. Director Matt Reeves paused work earlier this month to attend to an ongoing family matter.
The superhero sequel, which stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on February 18, 2028. The project joins a unique group of major studio blockbusters that faced heavy delays during production, a phenomenon that has previously impacted films like George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

Robert Pattinson Calls Steven Soderbergh’s Involvement Completely Selfless
Speaking to GamesRadar+ while promoting his recent release Primetime, Pattinson shared his appreciation for the Oscar-winning director behind Ocean’s Eleven, Magic Mike and Traffic stepping onto the set. Pattinson is having a banner year in 2026, appearing in The Drama, The Odyssey, and Primetime, with Dune: Part Three still expected in December.
I am so happy he’s come on to help Matt. It’s incredibly generous of him – and he’s doing it in the loveliest way. It’s completely selfless.

Pattinson noted that Reeves had already invested an enormous amount of effort into the script and production, leaving the sequel roughly two-thirds complete. Having a filmmaker of Soderbergh’s caliber step in without altering the established creative vision provides a steady path toward the edit room.

I think Matt had put so much work into the script, and we’re almost done. So for someone to come in and say, ‘I just want to help Matt do it; I want to do it in conjunction with him and just get it to the edit.’ And to have someone who’s as talented as Steven doing it is great.

Matt Reeves Remains Involved as Principal Photography Resumes in London
Production in London was temporarily paused when Warner Bros. announced on October 5 that Reeves needed to step away to focus on family matters. Following initial headlines, both the director and DC Studios co-chief James Gunn clarified that Reeves is not walking away from the project. This situation drew some comparisons to the history of Justice League, but studio executives and the production team have emphasized that Reeves remains the director of The Batman Part II.
Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II.

Reeves expressed his gratitude on social media, writing that he is profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography.
Gunn similarly posted on Threads to reassure fans that Reeves remains the driving creative force behind the film, noting that the studio was profoundly moved by Soderbergh’s offer to help complete the vision.

The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.

The film brings back several key figures from the 2022 original alongside prominent new cast members. While rumors previously circulated regarding specific roles for the new additions—such as Sebastian Stan potentially playing Harvey Dent or Victor Zsasz, and Scarlett Johansson being linked to Poison Ivy—official character details for the new cast remain unconfirmed.
- Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman

The sequel continues the Batman Epic Crime Saga
established by Reeves, focusing on the dark underbelly of Gotham. Recent production sightings have captured scenes of Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne walking through crowds of protestors, with signs referencing social and economic unrest. The Batman Part II is currently set to open in cinemas on February 18, 2028, following a series of delays from its original October 2025 and September 2027 windows.
