Roberto Benigni will be the face-symbol of Danted 2021, or Thursday 25 March, on the 700th anniversary of the poet’s death. At 7.15 pm the actor will recite a song by the Quirinale live on RaiunoDivine Comedy (not yet revealed) in the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella: an event that will significantly connect the Palazzo del Head of State with the homes of all citizens to pay homage together to the father of our language, an instrument that has made many Italians centuries before political unity.
only one of at least 500 events planned for the 700 anniversary, a vast list presented yesterday by the Minister of Culture (new denomination of the department) Dario Franceschini: Dante Alighieri helps us to feel that we are a national community with a strong identity, to do their part by supporting the others. It also helps us to have confidence. The last words ofInferno are very famous, “and then we went out to see the stars”. We are all waiting to see the stars again, listen to music, see theater, watch cinema together in the wonderful Italian squares.
In addition to the Danted 2021 (the idea is due to Paolo Di Stefano who proposed it in italics in Corriere della Sera on 24 April 2019, the name was subsequently coined with the linguist Francesco Sabatini) the eighteenth century foresees 104 directly funded initiatives – as the president recalled yesterday of the Committee for the celebrations of Dante, Carlo Ossola – with 2,600,000 euros.
The hundred and more events (other 400 events were instead sponsored) include 19 national and international conferences and seminars, 34 exhibitions, 10 publications, 36 shows and 4 walks in Dante’s places, 2 research grants, 3 national summer school courses for high school teachers, an opera. Six special projects were also supported – explained the secretary of the Committee, Maria Ida Gaeta – such as the integral exhibition of the 243 works of Francesco Scaramuzza at the Pilotta Complex in Parma with his illustrations of the Divine Comedy realized between 1853 and 1876, an exhibition and an international conference at the Italian Pavilion of the Dubai Expo (the exhibition of the Arab editions of Divine Comedy together with the first prints of the Koran, produced in Italy between the 16th and 17th centuries), the program of the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto (Dante and the Music, Dante and the Theater, Dante and the Arts). Also financed the new opera by Pascal Dusapin,The journey, Dante with libretto by Frdric Boyer, co-produced with the Aix-en-Provence International Festival of the Lyric Arts.
In Rome, at the Quirinal Stables, an important chapter with the exhibition Inferno, from 5 October to 9 January 2022, curated by Jean Claire who, as President Mario De Simoni explained, retraces all of Dante’s iconography to the point of touching the very current and painful themes of contemporary hells on earth, with works by Auguste Rodin at starry skies by Gerhard Richter. Also in Rome between Palazzo Braschi and Barracco museum, a female exhibition, that is La Vita Nova: love in Dante in the eyes of ten artists, curated by Alessandra Mamm, will exhibit from Letizia Battaglia to Giosetta Fioroni.
The effort of the three Dante cities is very visible. Florence – as mayor Dario Nardella anticipated – among numerous proposals (on 700dantefirenze.it the detailed list) provides, in addition to the restoration of Dante’s cenotaph in Santa Croce, ready for March 25, also the launch of the expected Museo della Lingua in the Santa Maria Novella complex: the first lot will open to the public by the end of 2021. And then the largest virtual reading of Dante ever, says Nardella: a social initiative created in collaboration with the Dante Society of America and New York University, a call to actionthat will invite people from all over the world to recite the favorite songs of the Comedy. The mayor of Verona, Federico Sboarina, mentioned in particular (also in this case, among many others, danteaverona.it) two spectacular moments: the results of the DNA tests on the remains of Cangrande della Scala, to finally discover the reasons for its death, and an unprecedented stage of the Giro d’Italia in Dante’s name on 21 May, the Ravenna-Verona.
As for Ravenna (vivadante.it) the mayor Michele De Pascale spoke of the highly anticipated concert on Sunday 12 September 2021 when the conductor Riccardo Muti, in Piazza San Francesco, will conclude the Dante celebrations. There is the commitment of Rai as a public service, described by the director of Rai Cultura, Silvia Calandrelli (who also curated the Benigni-Quirinale event). It will be destined above all to the new generations: a Dante’s tale with special programming on Rai 5, Rai Storia and Rai Scuola, and on the web one hundred short video lessons and as many small films on Dante’s places.
Finally Rai Cinema with Pupi Avati and his film on Alighieri. Just yesterday the Bolognese director confirmed: If there are no accidents along the way, because these days you have to be superstitious, shooting will start in May in Cinecitt to continue in Tuscany and Emilia. He will be a very human Dante, above all he will be a boy Dante.
The volume
To celebrate the 700th anniversary of the death of Alighieri, the Culture Editor of Corriere edited the book Danted. Contemporary visions of the poet (pp. 115, euro 15; cover here above), created by la Lettura and Fondazione Corriere della Sera. The text collects the contributions of Paolo Di Stefano (to whom we owe the proposal of the day for the poet and the name, chosen with the linguist Francesco Sabatini), Alberto Casadei, Arturo Carlo Quintavalle and Franco Achilli.
