The photo summarizes in one image a nascent debate between supporters of dogs to guide blind people, a traditional and widely expressed solution, although with certain limits, and supporters of specialized robots doing the same job, an avant-garde solution that promises. offer users many more features than dogs can offer, although the reliability of these guiding robots has not yet been demonstrated.
A team led by Hochul Hwang, from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, United States of America, conducts a somewhat conciliatory investigation in this regard. In this study, Hwang and his colleagues recommend robots but under the condition that their development works closely with guide dog users and guide dog trainers.
The study in question is titled “To Optimize Guide Dog Robots, First Listen to the Visually Impaired.” And it was presented at the 2024 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2024), where it won an award. (Source: NYT of Amazings)
