The main prize winner “Everspace 2” shines at the annual gala of the German video game industry. But a horror game takes home the most trophies.

“Everspace 2” was named the best German video game at the German Computer Game Prize (DCP). The space epic from development studio Rockfish Games from Hamburg won the coveted main prize. At the award ceremony in Munich, it beat out the open-world role-playing game “Atlas Fallen” and the adventure “Fall of Porcupine,” which were also nominated.

The horror game “Ad Infinitum” took home the most blue glowing trophies. It received awards for best debut, best audio design and, in the new category, best story. The game deals with the horrors of the First World War.

It was developed by Studio Hekate in Berlin. “When you play through the game, you also notice that there’s not just horror in it, but also a lot of soul,” said studio owner Lukas Deuschel on stage.

The jury was “spoiled for choice”.

“I can only pity the jury, they were really spoiled for choice,” said Felix Falk, managing director of the Game Association, which co-organizes the prize, to the German Press Agency before the award ceremony.

“Due to the delay in developments caused by the corona pandemic and the associated postponement of publications, more great games have been released in the last year than ever before.”

As in the previous year, the gala, which lasted around two and a half hours, was hosted by the moderation duo Katrin Bauerfeind and Uke Bosse.

Maurice Weber is player of the year

Maurice Weber was honored in the “Player of the Year” category. Weber works at the media company Webedia and is best known as a strategy game expert for “GameStar”. “Of course I deserve this,” Weber said jokingly after accepting the award on stage.

“I am very pleased that the jury has once again shown that in the “Player of the Year” category, taking responsibility even on difficult topics and working towards good cooperation in the community played a role,” said Falk . “The winner Maurice Weber has a very clear stance for diversity and against extremism.”

Markus Söder was the laudator

The Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) gave the laudatory speech for the studio of the year. The prize went to Pixel Maniacs from Nuremberg, which most recently released the party racing game “Can’t Drive This”.

Söder described the computer games industry as one of the “most important and exciting industries of the future”. He announced that the Free State wanted to “continue to strongly promote” the industry in the future. He also came out as a fan of the football simulation series “FIFA”, which has been called “EA Sports FC” since 2023.

This year, 800,000 euros in prize money were distributed at the DCP. However, it is not a promotional award, says game boss Falk. “It’s not a promotion, but an appreciation; a cultural prize that not only promises a handshake, but also a bonus.”
