Rock legend Rod Stewart publicly condemned Donald Trump Friday for questioning the commitment of U.K. troops during the nearly 20-year war in Afghanistan, calling the former president a “draft dodger.” The pointed rebuke underscores growing international criticism of Trump’s recent remarks.
Stewart’s Fiery Response to Trump’s Claims
The singer,a Knight of the Realm, didn’t hold back in expressing his outrage over the comments.
In a video posted to Instagram on Friday, Stewart stated, “I may just be a humble rock star, but I’m also a Knight of the realm and I have my opinions.” He continued, explaining his deep respect for the armed forces, having been born shortly after World War II. “so it hurts me badly, deeply, when I read that draft dodger Trump has criticized our troops in Afghanistan for not being on the front line.”
Stewart emphasized the significant sacrifice made by U.K. forces, noting that over 400 service personnel lost their lives during the conflict. “Think of their parents. Think about it,” he implored. “And Trump calls them almost, like, cowards. It’s unbearable.” He then directly appealed to Prime minister Keir Starmer and Nigel Farage, urging them to demand an apology from Trump.
Widespread Condemnation of Trump’s Remarks
Stewart wasn’t alone in his criticism. Prime Minister Starmer also denounced Trump’s comments as “insulting” and “frankly appalling.” He added,”I am not surprised they have caused such hurt to the loved ones of those who were killed or injured and,in fact, across the country.”
prince Harry also addressed the controversy, though without directly naming Trump. The Duke of Sussex reflected on his own service in Afghanistan, stating,”I served there. I made lifelong friends there. And I lost friends there. The United Kingdom alone had 457 service personnel killed.” He underscored the profound impact of the war, noting, “Thousands of lives were changed forever. Mothers and fathers buried sons and daughters. Children were left without a parent. Families are left carrying the cost.”
Prince Harry concluded by asserting that these sacrifices “deserved to be spoken about truthfully and with respect.”
