Rodolfo Hernández, former presidential candidate and former mayor of Bucaramanga, passed away this Monday, September 2, at the International Hospital of Colombia (HIC) in Piedecuesta.

The 79-year-old engineer, who had been hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit for almost two monthswas unable to overcome complications arising after undergoing surgery for terminal liver cancer.

Since the early hours of Monday, rumors began to spread about his delicate state of health and possible death. According to reports, Hernandez had left the hospital after surgery last month, but his condition worsened significantly due to a vein problem, which forced his re-admission to the hospital in Santander, where he remained until his death.

The International Hospital of Colombia confirmed the news in an official statement issued around 1:30 p.m., stating that “despite all the efforts made by our medical and care team, Engineer Rodolfo Hernández Suárez passed away today due to complications from his metastatic neoplastic pathology of the colon.”

The hospital also expressed its condolences to the former candidate’s family, stressing the importance of respecting their privacy at this difficult time: “We deeply regret this sensitive event and, on behalf of all the HIC staff, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, loved ones and supporters.”

Mauricio Hernández, one of the engineer’s sons, shared a touching farewell on social media. He posted a photo of his father on Instagram accompanied by the message: “I love you daddy, I will always love you until the last day of my life. Thank you for so much love, thank you for everything.”
