Rodri Injury Deals Blow to Manchester City’s Premier League Title Hopes

A fresh injury to key midfielder Rodri has cast doubt on Manchester City’s ability to defend their Premier League title in the 2025/2026 season, according to recent analysis from former City defender Micah Richards. The setback, occurring at the 2025 Club World Cup, significantly alters the landscape of the upcoming campaign.
The Spanish international, who recently returned from a lengthy absence due to an ACL injury sustained last season, suffered a groin injury during the Club World Cup tournament. Initial estimates suggest Rodri could be sidelined until mid-September, potentially extending into October.
“If Rodri is fit, I think they can compete to the end, but it looks like he won’t be fit, maybe until October,” a leading football analyst stated. “I don’t think it changes the narration, because he is important in stopping the counterattack.”
Despite City’s significant investment in new players, Richards believes Rodri’s absence will be keenly felt. He highlighted the potential of Tijjani Reijnders, recently acquired from Milan, to fill the void. “Tijjani Reijnders from Milan is a very good player, he can play as number 6, also number 8, he scored several goals in the preseason,” Richards explained. He also noted that Nico Gonzalez, utilized in the number 6 role last season, appeared more suited to a number 8 position.
Liverpool Emerges as Early Title Favorite
Richards has tipped Liverpool as the frontrunner for the Premier League title this season. “Liverpool will be there, I think they will be my favorite this season,” he asserted.
Chelsea’s performance at the Club World Cup also impressed Richards, positioning them as serious contenders. However, he expressed reservations about Arsenal, citing a need for further strengthening, particularly on the left flank. “And we have talked about Arsenal about the need for a striker, I still think they are somewhat lacking on the left side. I think Martinelli is more to the player who has an impact (as a substitute) than starter,” he added.
City Begins Campaign with Tough Away Fixture
Manchester City will begin their 2025/2026 Premier League campaign with an away match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, August 16, 2025. The early-season clash will provide a crucial test of City’s depth and resilience in the face of Rodri’s injury.
