After Ralf Rangnick’s rejection, FC Bayern needs a new coach. One trail supposedly leads to Portugal.

According to a report in “Bild”, FC Bayern is interested in Roger Schmidt. The “Bayern-Insider” podcast states that the 57-year-old’s name has repeatedly appeared on the list, although initially with fewer chances. Since Ralf Rangnick’s rejection, Bayern have been “going full speed” on Schmidt, according to “Bild”, which relies on well-informed advisory circles.

Schmidt is currently the coach of Benfica Lisbon. He has been working in Portugal for almost two years, celebrated the championship in his first year and also won the Supercup. He also reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League with Benfica last season.

At the moment, however, there is a bit of a crisis as Benfica is only second behind city rivals Sporting. The Schmidt team also suffered a 5-0 defeat against FC Porto in March. His contract in Lisbon runs until 2026, so a transfer fee would be necessary.

Schmidt last worked in Germany in 2017 before leaving Bayer Leverkusen for China. He was previously coach of Red Bull Salzburg (Austria), SC Paderborn and Preußen Münster. Before Benfica, he worked for PSV Eindhoven and won the Dutch Cup with the red and whites.
