Mumbai: The BCCI last week appointed opener Rohit Sharma as the white ball captain of the Indian cricket team. Despite taking over the T20 captaincy from Virat Kohli last month, the BCCI handed over the ODI and Test vice-captaincy to Rohit. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has now explained the reasons behind Rohit’s promotion to Team India leadership.

‘Rohit Sharma was made the captain because the selectors felt he would lead the team well. His record with the Mumbai Indians with five wins in the IPL is astounding. He led the team to the Asia Cup without Virat Kohli and won the title. Winning the title without Kohli shows the strength of the team. So Rohit can win big tournaments. India have a great team. So the hope is that we can succeed, ”Ganguly said in an interview.

As Ganguly said earlier

Earlier, BCCI president Sourav had said that the board and the selectors had jointly selected Virat Kohli to replace him. ‘The BCCI had requested Kohli not to step down from the T20 captaincy. But he did not accept it. With this, the selectors felt that it would not be beneficial for two different captains to come in two formats of white ball cricket. So Virat Kohli decided to continue as captain in the Tests and take over as white ball captain Rohit Sharma. “As the head of the BCCI, the selectors and I have spoken to Kohli,” Ganguly told ANI.

The BCCI on Wednesday announced the replacement of Virat Kohli with Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain. Hitman’s first mission is to start the series against South Africa in January. When the Test squad against South Africa was announced, the selectors selected Rohit as the ODI captain. The announcement was made in a one-line tweet.

Virat Kohli has stepped down as Team India’s T20 captain after the World Cup. Kohli also relinquished the captaincy of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. Kohli was replaced by Rohit Sharma in the T20 series against New Zealand after the World Cup. Under Rohit, India swept the series 3-0. This was followed by a crucial change in the ODI captaincy. Rohit’s IPL record and Asia Cup victory helped him.
