Mumbai: Vice-captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of India’s tour of South Africa with a hamstring injury. Cricket Info reports that Rohit Sharma, who injured his finger while training in the Nets in Mumbai on Sunday, is doubtful to play in the Test series.

Although the severity of Rohit’s injury is not clear, there are indications that Priyank Panchal will be included in the BCCI squad to replace Rohit if he is unable to play for any reason. In ODIs, Rohit was selected to replace Virat Kohli as captain and in the Test series, Rohit was replaced by Ajinkya Rahane as vice-captain.

If Rohit fails to play in the ODI series after the Test series, the BCCI will have to select a new captain again in the ODIs. If Rohit does not play in the Tests, Ajinkya Rahane will have to be made vice-captain again or a new vice-captain will be selected.

Rohit’s replacement 31 – year – old Priyank Panchal is a consistent batsman in domestic cricket. Panchal, who plays for Gujarat, has scored 7011 runs in first-class cricket, including 24 centuries and 25 fifties. Panchal had scored 96 in the unofficial Test of Team A’s tour of South Africa ahead of India’s tour of South Africa.

The India-South Africa Test series starts on December 26. The three-match ODI series starts on January 19.
