Speaker of the National Parliament. Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury said that the media’s analytical report on underprivileged children helps policy makers to take effective steps to ensure children’s rights. Media plays an important role in creating awareness about child rights.
The speaker said this while addressing the chief guest at the ‘UNICEF Meena Media Awards’ organized by UNICEF at the Grand Ballroom of Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel on Monday (April 22).
Speaker Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury said, Meen cartoon creates social awareness on various child rights issues including child education, gender equality, prevention of child marriage. UNICEF is working to create awareness about children’s rights and creating awareness about children’s rights in various media is the purpose of Meena Media Awards.
He said, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman loved children very much. Bangabandhu guaranteed the rights of children in the constitution. Bangabandhu implemented the Child Rights Act in 1974 long before the United Nations Charter on the Rights of the Child. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina continues to work to protect children’s rights. Financial incentives are being provided so that children can go to school without engaging in child labour. Children’s needs should be highlighted.
Journalists selected in 12 categories were awarded in the event. At this time the speaker distributed the prizes among the winners. Sheldon Yate, UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh, delivered the welcome address at the 18th Meena Media Awards.
