Both fighters cleared the 147-pound threshold during the official weigh-ins, making the championship bout official. Romero stepped on the scale at 146.6 pounds, while Lopez weighed in right at the 147-pound limit. The proceedings wrapped up with an intense faceoff at the Presidio Ballroom at Park MGM on August 21, 2026, captured by photographer Cris Esqueda for Getty Images.

Fans looking to watch the card live can access the pay-per-view broadcast through Prime Video PPV and DAZN PPV. According to event listings, the pay-per-view start time is set for 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT, preceded by prelims at 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT (which are free for Prime members), with the main event ring walk scheduled for 11:13 pm ET. The main pay-per-view card features three bouts before the main event.

Pathways to the Welterweight Division and Championship Stakes

Lopez enters the ring making his divisional debut at welterweight, moving up after reigning as the lineal and WBO champion at junior welterweight for over two years. His run at 140 pounds concluded in January, as he suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Shakur Stevenson, soon after announcing his plans to campaign in a new weight class. At 28 years old, the champion in lightweight and super lightweight divisions enters this Saturday in Las Vegas seeking his third world title by capturing the WBA 147-pound belt.

I’m very grateful for everything that happened with Shakur, Lopez declared. It confirmed something I already knew: I should have trusted my instincts. I should have moved up to the welterweight weight category a year ago, but here we are, and we haven’t missed a beat.

Romero arrives for this title defense at 30 years old, fighting as the local competitor after securing the most significant victory of his career. He surprised observers in May 2025 by defeating Ryan Garcia in Times Square, capturing the vacant WBA “Regular” title. He was subsequently elevated to full champion by the sanctioning body last August, making this upcoming 12-round battle his first defense of the WBA belt.

I'm ready for this fight. It's put up or shut up at this point, Lopez said on August 19. They want to see if I still have it. I'm ready to do whatever it takes. This is my road to undisputed at welterweight. It starts August 22. I see myself with my hand raised. Nothing but victory.

The winner of the August 22 clash stands to secure a crack at an even bigger opportunity the next time out, with the matchup serving as the potential first step toward a title-unification bout later in the year or early in 2027.

A History of Friendship and Mutual Respect Outside the Ring

Despite the high-stakes nature of their 147-pound championship meeting, the two fighters share a deep personal history that spans several years, including prior experience working as sparring partners for one another. Romero described their bond during a joint sit-down interview.

He's like my little brother, Rolly said regarding his relationship with Teofimo. We spent a lot of time together, a lot of time. Not as of recently, but we did spend a lot of time. Life does go on. He has his family, he has his kids, everything, I'm focusing on my own stuff.

Lopez echoed those sentiments about stepping into the ring against someone he considers a peer and friend. We spoke on it… but we're here. He's the champ, and I want to thank the champ for giving me the opportunity to get in the ring with him and try to take over, Lopez noted.

Romero also expressed gratitude for how Lopez supported him during a difficult period in his personal and professional life. I got to say thank you, too. You helped me out a lot, and you know how you helped me out a lot, Romero shared. “I remember after he beat Nakatani, I remember I was in a bad place financially, I remember Teo gave me $5k out of nowhere. He just calls me randomly… out of nowhere he just sends me $5k. That money did so much for me. I can’t really say anything bad, you know?”

According to Romero’s recollection, Lopez provided the $5,000 unprompted shortly after he beat Nakatani.

Additional Action on the Card

The event also features an eight-round middleweight showdown between undefeated rising fighter Marco Romero and the once-beaten Kahlil Mitchell, headlining a three-fight PBC Prelims presentation streaming live on DAZN and Prime Video.
