  • 2006 Russian Olympic champion in figure skating, Roman Kostomarow, suffered severe pneumonia.

  • To save his life, his feet and left hand were amputated.

  • His breathing is now functioning independently and he is learning to eat and sit again.

Roman Kostomarov seems to have won his fight for life. As reported by Russian media, the Russian figure skater is finally on the mend after his fate went around the world.

A few days ago, the 46-year-old was separated from the ventilators. His breathing works independently and he is fully conscious. He is slowly learning to do things again that are commonplace for most people. So he learns to chew and swallow again, as the “Sportexpress” reports. He is also learning to sit again, but still needs support.

Multiple amputations – no further surgeries now planned

On January 10, the figure skater was admitted to a Moscow clinic. A Covid infection that initially seemed manageable developed into severe pneumonia. Massive circulatory disorders, gangrene and dying tissue were added.

In order to save him, the doctors treating him have amputated his left hand and feet. After that, the 46-year-old suffered multiple cerebral hemorrhages, two strokes, meningitis and multiple brain swellings. The doctors treating him estimated his chances of survival at 50 percent, according to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

Further operations or amputations are currently not necessary. However, Kostomarow would still need medical care for a few more weeks, as there was a risk of organ failure after blood poisoning and taking all the medication.
