Pilot-Cosmonaut, Hero of Russia Roman Romanenko congratulated the Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky and Pyotr Dubov, who first went into outer space to perform work outside the ISS, and talked about the difficulties of such work.

“Extravehicular activity is one of the most difficult and dangerous elements of an astronaut’s work. There are a million little things that need to be prepared and foreseen in advance, right up to the fitting of the spacesuit, ”noted Romanenko.

According to him, preparation for a spacewalk begins long before the appointed day, and hundreds of specialists are involved in this work. Romanenko added that during his work in open space, the astronaut can lose up to several kilograms of weight, since the work is very hard in physical terms.

“Today Oleg Novitsky and Petr Dubrov have successfully completed the exit program. This is the first such experience in their career – and they did a great job. Congratulations!” – said Romanenko.

Note that the work of the Russian cosmonaut outside the ISS lasted 6 and a half hours. During this time, Novitsky and Dubrov managed to replace the liquid flow control panel, installed the necessary equipment for the Test and Endurance scientific space experiments on the outer surface of the Poisk module, connected the Kurs system antennas on the transition compartment to ensure docking of the new Russian module “The science”.

Two more spacewalks are scheduled for September this year. In total, ten such exits will be required to connect Nauka to the Russian segment of the ISS. The Science module is currently undergoing the latest factory control tests.
