A law banning the sale of e-cigarettes to minors was passed on Tuesday by the Chamber of Deputies (the lower house of the Romanian parliament), which is the deciding body in the case. Deputies adopted several amendments that were initially rejected, Digi24 reports.

The sale of products containing tobacco and electronic cigarettes, bottles for electronic cigarettes, electronic devices for heating tobacco to youth under the age of 18 is prohibited, according to the published document. In order to verify the age of people buying these types of products, sellers will be able to require the presentation of an identity document.

The sale of all categories of products containing nicotine, electronic cigarettes, electronic cigarette bottles, electronic tobacco heating devices through vending machines and through easybox/locker type devices is also prohibited. Those products that are sold through courier services must have a message printed on the package as legibly as possible: “Caution! This package contains tobacco products and/or products containing nicotine. Check the customer’s age”.

According to one of the amendments, the placing on the market of nicotine pouches (pouches) for oral use, which do not comply with the provisions of the law, is prohibited. The nicotine level cannot exceed the value of 20 mg per bag.

Educational institutions are required to introduce in their own regulations coercive measures applied to students for non-compliance with regulations related to the sale/possession and use of all categories of products containing tobacco, e-cigarettes and electronic devices on the premises of educational institutions.

The law introduces sanctions of up to 100,000 lei depending on the gravity of the act, BTA reported. The detection of violations and the imposition of sanctions will be carried out by persons authorized by the Ministry of Health and the National Service for Consumer Protection, by representatives of the local police or the Ministry of the Interior.
