Romania is a source of security, it guards the external borders of the EU and NATO, so it should fully join Schengen. This was stated by the chairman of the National Liberal Party in Romania and chairman of the Senate, Nicolae Chuca, during the opening of the congress of the European People’s Party in Bucharest. NLP hosts the event in the Romanian capital.

“Romania deserves to become a full member of Schengen. We have fulfilled our obligations, we have met the benchmarks, and people have an interest in seeing this goal become a reality. Thank you for including the topic in the manifesto, which we will vote on later today”, said Chuka.

During his speech to the delegates, he also touched on the topic of the war in Ukraine.

“From day one, we stand by Ukraine, which is fighting against the Russian aggressor. We also help the Republic of Moldova. In these difficult times, when we face war on the European continent, we are showing pragmatic leadership from the EPP. We took Ukrainian refugees into our homes. Ukraine is part of Europe and should become part of the EU soon,” Chuka added, quoted by BTA.

According to him, the danger of destabilization of the EU is stronger than ever.

“We cannot allow a destructive narrative before the European elections”, said the chairman of the NLP.

Earlier today, delegates of the conservative Austrian People’s Party (APP) attending the European People’s Party (EPP) Congress in Bucharest, rejected the Schengen membership requested by Bulgaria and Romania. “The Schengen system is not working. We have to repair it and we should not turn a blind eye to it,” said party general secretary Christian Stocker.
