The national team of Romania won the medals at the 4th World Sport Fishing Championship in the “Freestyle Method Feeder” discipline at the Rowing Canal in Plovdiv.

The champion team of our northern neighbors caught a total of 102,505 kg of fish and lifted the title, followed by the teams of Hungary and Slovakia. In the ranking by nations, Bulgaria finished in seventh place with a catch of 59,180 kg, which was considered a very good performance in view of the task set by the Bulgarian Federation of Fishing Sports for a place in the top 10. A total of 29 teams and 115 competitors from 17 countries participated.

The Romanian Bogdan Vuculescu became the individual champion, followed by the representative of Hungary Bence Shabo and another competitor of Romania Sherbu Horaciu. The champion lifted the title with a catch for the two competition days of 34,870 kg. In total, 1,373,815 kg of fish were caught on the canal over the two days. Andrey Andrianov, competitor of “River Monsters” (Gorna Oryahovitsa) performed best among our nationals with 28,440 kg.

The winners were the teams that best mastered carp fishing. It was this type that turned out to be the most suitable for piling on pounds in the mercury tanks. However, for a higher ranking, at least one or two carp had to be caught, some of which reached 5-6 kg. Catching them, however, proved to be a difficult job and quite often there were broken lines, upright hooks and freakishly large fish. Considered among the favourites, the England team, led by the famous anglers Phil Ringers and Tommy Pickerink, remained as low as tenth in the nations.

“I congratulate the organizers, who did an excellent job, as well as all the competitors and coaches. The World Championship was extremely interesting, I saw manifestations of very high mastery of the channel. Those who knew best how to fish for carp won,” said FIPS World Sport Fishing Federation representative Jan Van Schendl from the Netherlands.

The chairman of the Bulgarian Federation of Fishing Sports, Georgi Mihailov, added that this year alone, this is the second world championship in sport fishing, which is organized in Plovdiv after the world championship for masters, veterans and people with disabilities earlier in June.

On November 15 and 16, Veliko Tarnovo will host the world championship in speed fishing for trout in a closed pond – Trout Area, and 15 national teams are expected to throw rods at the sports fishing base in the village of Kapinovo.

“We are all very grateful to the municipality of Plovdiv and the management of the Rowing Canal for the invaluable help they provide us. According to the FIPS assessment, the canal is one of the three best facilities for holding world championships in sport fishing, for which we will submit an application in one of the following years to hold the championship for juniors and youth here as well,” said Mihailov.
