Romanian F-16 Jets Shoot Down Two Drones Over Territorial Waters

Two Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets intercepted and shot down two drones over national territorial waters on Saturday, October 17, 2026, following a radar detection approximately 120 kilometers east of Zmiinyi (Snake) Island.

Radar Detection and Interception Over the Black Sea

The air defense operation unfolded in the late afternoon after radar surveillance systems registered a group of aerial targets moving in a southwesterly direction over the Black Sea, according to official reports from the Romanian Ministry of National Defense. Two F-16 jets scrambled from the 86th Air Base at Borca, near Fetești, to intercept the incoming objects.

Ministry officials detailed a rapid sequence of events as the uncrewed aerial vehicles crossed the maritime boundary. The first incoming drone breached Romanian airspace at 17:59 and was shot down within two minutes. Radu Miruță stated that the initial target was neutralized 25 kilometers southeast of Sulina, while another source noted the first destruction occurred at 18:01.

The second aircraft followed closely behind. It entered national airspace at 18:01 and was intercepted and destroyed at 18:05 by a second F-16 fighter jet 20 kilometers east of Sulina. Both objects were confirmed to have been shot down over national territorial waters.

Identification of the Geran Family Drones

Initial reports from military authorities confirmed the objects were unmanned aerial vehicles. Subsequent updates from the defense ministry provided a precise classification of the hardware involved.

Translated from official military disclosures, the ministry specified that the downed aircraft belonged to the Geran family of jet-powered attack drones. The incident marks a direct engagement with armed aerial hardware over the country’s maritime territory.

Escalating Maritime Tensions Near Black Sea Export Corridors

The October 17 interception arrives during a volatile period for Black Sea shipping lanes and export routes. In the days leading up to the incident, drone attacks struck two chemical tankers near the Sulina Canal, a vital artery for agricultural and commercial exports from Ukraine. Those earlier strikes left seven crew members missing.

Additional incidents near the maritime borders of Romania and neighboring Bulgaria over a ten-day window involved at least five targeted cargo vessels, resulting in 23 reported deaths or missing sailors. Most of those preceding incidents occurred outside NATO territorial waters. Responding to the mounting security pressures, the Romanian government has proposed taking on a portion of the costs for the American military contingent and intends to invest approximately 4 billion euros in the development of the Mihail Kogălniceanu NATO air base, hoping to maintain the US military presence in the region.
