“Islam outside Europe” they chanted in the streets of Romans-sur-Isère. Saturday evening, around 80 members of the ultra-right marched, hoods on their heads, smoke bombs and iron bars in their hands, in the Monnaie district of Romans-sur-Isère.

Their mobilization was linked to the death of young Thomas, in Crépol, last weekend. Romans-sur-Isère is the town where the alleged attackers of the village hall reside. This parade coincides with the presentation to the Valencia prosecutor’s office of the young suspects accused of having participated in the violence which led to Thomas’ death. Nine suspects were arrested this week, including a 20-year-old believed to be the perpetrator of the fatal blows.

20 arrests

The Drôme prefecture indicates that 20 people were arrested and 17 placed in police custody.

“Around 6 p.m., 80 individuals tried to enter the Monnaie district to fight and confronted the police,” specifies the Drôme prefecture. Fireworks mortars were fired, trash cans deployed to prevent the incident, but nothing was set on fire, a police source said. “The situation has calmed down but we remain under close surveillance,” underlined the prefecture.

“This had been anticipated in the afternoon and the minister had passed very strict instructions,” said the entourage of Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin.

The activists, hooded and dressed in black, marched through the streets behind a banner “Justice for Thomas, neither forgiveness nor forgetting”, chanting “The street, France, belongs to us”, according to images posted on social networks by the ultra-right.

“Right now at #RomansSurIsère far-right militias parade with racist slogans and take action to carry out mass shootings. Hatred of Muslims as a standard. We must stop them! », reacted on X (ex-Twitter), the La France Insoumise deputy for Seine-Saint-Denis Thomas Portes.

The ultra-right, which has been leading a virulent campaign on social networks since the tragedy, has also broadcast images of “spontaneous processions in tribute to Thomas with French flags”, filmed according to them in Valencia on Friday evening. A banned ultra-right demonstration in Lyon led to an arrest Thursday evening, according to the Rhône prefecture.

This Saturday, two mosques, in Cherbourg and Valence, were the target of death threats and Islamophobic tags, accompanied by references to the death of Thomas.
