The construction site inaugurated by the President of the Republic Mattarella and the Minister of Culture Sangiuliano. Mario Botta’s project: 8 thousand square meters of space planned

The construction site for the new Library of Archeology and Art History of Rome has been inaugurated, now housed between Palazzo Venezia and the Collegio Romano. The new headquarters will be in Palazzo San Felice, in via della Dataria, in the Quirinale complex and in the historic building that once housed the offices and residences of officials. The inauguration was attended by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, who has always supported the project, the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, the Swiss architect Mario Botta, who created the recovery and restoration plan for the complex, the director of the State Property, Alessandra Dal Verme, and the president of the Superior Council of Cultural Heritage, Gerardo Villanacci.

Mattarella thanked Sangiuliano for having taken up the project with conviction and determination, an important moment for the life of the Quirinale and for the city of Rome. Sangiuliano spoke of a new and prestigious headquarters in a historical context of great importance. Dal Verme promised maximum attention in the timing of the construction site. A chain of strong collaboration between institutions: the Quirinale opened the property to the public, the Ministry of Culture financed the project, the State Property Office, as the contracting authority, follows the restoration and operations linked to the construction.

The project signed by Botta involves the restoration, valorisation and new use of 8 thousand square meters of usable interiors and exteriors, the placement of 14 kilometers of shelving for the Library’s heritage (from incunabula to digital cataloguing). And then reading rooms, areas for events, exhibitions, concerts, a multipurpose room with a transparent roof that can accommodate 350 people. An internal space will welcome students and visitors from via della Dataria, imagined as a square that opens up to the city. Palazzo San Felice dates back to 1860 and was built by order of Pius IX who entrusted the project to the architect Filippo Martinucci, on the area where the Capuchin convent of the church of San Bonaventura stood.
