shortly after Ron DeSantis Dropped out of the GOP primary, he reportedly told supporters he had no interest in being Donald TrumpThe vice president argued that Trump had not actually accomplished anything important as president, bemoaned the support Trump received after each indictment, and chided the conservative media for not publishing critical stories about his opponent. B Comment, a senior Trump adviser called the Florida governor a “sad little man” who will only be remembered for “chicken fingers and pudding cups.” Apparently, though, none of that is stopping DeSantis from pulling out all the stops to help Trump get re-elected.

At a donor retreat last weekend, DeSantis told supporters he planned to raise funds for Trump’s campaign, according to NBC News. An adviser to the governor confirmed the news, and reiterated to the newspaper that DeSantis had previously said he would support all Republicans on the ballot in November, “including (at the) presidential level.” DeSantis’ statement will likely lead to his supporters raising money for the former president, with one telling NBC News: “I would say the majority in the room would be willing to help Trump.” Businessman Roy Bailey, DeSantis, who chaired the National Fiscal Advisory Council, said, “I will follow the governor and do whatever he or President Trump asks me to do to help him win this election.”

The news of DeSantis’ willingness to raise funds for Trump evoked an immediate echo of the 2016 face from Ted Cruz, who went from blasting Trump for implying his wife was ugly (and suggesting his father hung out with the guy who murdered JFK) to working the phones in front of a bunch of Trump-Pen signs. Trump never commented on the appearance of DeSantis’ wife (that we know of), but he did:

  • claimed DeSantis shed tears while begging for an endorsement during DeSantis’ first gubernatorial run
  • declared that DeSantis would have worked at a law firm or Pizza Hut if it hadn’t been for him
  • Regularly call DeSantis “Ron DeSanctimonious”
  • to threaten Discover “Things about him that will not be particularly flattering”
  • Share posts on Truth Social because Picture rule of DeSantis allegedly partying with high school girls while working at a private school, with the original post claiming DeSantis was “grooming high school girls with booze as a teacher” (Trump’s captions read: “No way?” and “It’s not Ron, right? He would never do something like that !” Asked about Trump’s insinuations at the time, DeSantis told reporters: “I spend my time delivering results for the people of Florida and fighting against Joe Biden. That’s how I spend my time. Don’t waste my time trying to smear other Republicans.”)

But apparently, that’s all water under the bridge.

In addition to having shades of Cruz, DeSantis’ decision to go from Trump competitor (and punch line) to Trump’s bandleader is not unlike the journey of a group of billionaires who disowned the former president in the wake of Jan. 6 — saying things like “(Trump) lost me as a supporter.” And swore not to support him again – but recently he came crawling back.
