ZURICH, Switzerland – Georgina Rodríguez, 31, announced her engagement to Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo on Monday. She shared a photo on Instagram showcasing a sizable oval engagement ring, with Ronaldo’s hand visible in the background. “Yes I do. In this and in all my lives,” Rodríguez captioned the image in a translated post.
A Journey Through Love and Loss
The couple’s public relationship began in 2017. They first appeared together at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich, Switzerland. Later that year, they each shared posts featuring each other on social media.
Their family grew with the arrival of twins Eva Maria and Mateo, 8, via surrogate in June 2017. Their daughter, Alana, 7, was born in November 2017. Ronaldo also has a 15-year-old son, Cristiano Jr., from a previous relationship.
Tragedy struck in April 2022 when the couple announced the death of their twin son, Ángel. At the same time, they shared the birth of their twin daughter, Bella, who is now 3.
Ronaldo and Rodríguez shared their profound grief in a joint social media post. “It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel,” they stated. “Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.”
They also expressed gratitude for the medical team’s support. “We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time,” they wrote. “Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you.”
Days later, Ronaldo thanked his peers for their support on Instagram and shared that his newborn daughter was home from the hospital. A family photo accompanying the post included his three other children.
Reflections on Life’s Extremes
Rodríguez later reflected on this period in season two of her Netflix series, I Am Georgina, in 2023. “Over 40 million people follow me, but no one knows how I really feel. This year, I had the best and the worst moment of my life in an instant,” she said in a teaser for the season.
The teaser included footage of the couple with their twins’ sonogram and photos of them holding their newborn daughter. Rodríguez tearfully described how Ronaldo’s encouragement helped her navigate her grief.
“Life is hard. Life goes on,” she shared. “Life goes on. I have reasons to move on and be strong. Cris really encouraged me to continue with my agenda. He said, ‘Gio, get on with life. It’ll do you good.’”
The influencer emphasized her gratitude for her loved ones, stating, “My priority right now is my family and my children. I’m so happy and thankful.”
