Thousands of fans flocked to Saalfelden for a football test match, only to be massively disappointed when superstar Cristiano Ronaldo failed to appear.
Ronaldo No-Show Sparks Fan Outrage
SAALFELDEN, Austria – Saturday noon in the Pinzgau region saw an unusual scene. Parking lots and meadows surrounding the Saalfelden-Arena were packed. Streams of fans, many sporting Ronaldo jerseys, flowed towards the stadium, all eager to catch a glimpse of the global icon. Cristiano Ronaldo had arrived in Salzburg on Thursday and had been training with his Saudi club, Al-Nassr, in Saalfelden since Friday.
Sky-High Ticket Prices Amidst Ronaldo Mania
On Saturday, Al-Nassr was scheduled to play against SK St. Johann in Tyrol. Tickets for the match had reportedly fetched prices up to 600 euros online for the 2,000 available seats. Fans without tickets desperately sought vantage points, peering through fences or finding spots on elevated tennis courts and forest paths surrounding the stadium.
Whispers grew louder that Cristiano Ronaldo, or CR7, would not participate. Children pressed against the barriers near the substitute bench, hoping for a look at their idol, but the superstar was nowhere to be seen.
The five-time world player of the year apparently did not make the effort to watch his teammates or even acknowledge his eager fans.
Mané Steals the Show
Instead, Sadio Mané, who scored a goal in Al-Nassr’s 5-2 victory, received enthusiastic cheers. Following the final whistle, hundreds of fans surged towards the player exit. Mané, a former star for Salzburg, Liverpool, and Bayern, obliged with autographs and selfies, offering a small consolation to those disappointed by Ronaldo’s absence.
Fans will have another opportunity to potentially see CR7 live when Al-Nassr tests against Toulouse on Wednesday in Grödig.
