Rose Icela Rodriguez, head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) called to prevent the extortion via WhatsAppand explained the three modalities that the authorities have detected.

He indicated that there are three ways fraudsters operate:

  1. Alleged delivery men request a confirmation code sent to the victim’s phone, claiming that it is necessary to deliver a package.
  2. They ask for an installation code by phone, which is mainly done at night.
  3. Supposed friends, family or companies ask to make a video call and share the phone screen.

He therefore asked the public to be vigilant, protect their information and not provide passwords or codes, or respond to requests made by strangers.

“At the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection we have the Cyber ​​Guide with recommendations to prevent this type of fraud,” he emphasized.

He recommended enabling two-step verification; deleting your voicemail or setting a strong password; not sharing any codes; not enabling screen sharing; and being cautious with suspicious links and messages.
