The Main Radio Frequency Center (GRCHTs) plans to launch the Oculus system for searching illegal content in images and videos on the Internet in 2022, Kommersant reported, citing a tender worth 15 million rubles. to develop such a system. The system is slated to go live in 2022 and will detect extremist materials, drug propaganda, incitement to riot and suicide, and pornography.

The tender documents state that the system should use artificial intelligence to speed up the process. The work must be completed by December 17th.

The Oculus trademark has been assigned to Facebook since 2019, and the company is developing a VR system under this brand. In March 2021, Rospatent approved Facebook’s application for the Oculus trademark in Cyrillic. Anatoly Semenov, deputy chairman of the RSPP Committee on Intellectual Property, said that in theory, Facebook could ban computer programs and information services under this name if the HRChTs uses it to provide commercial services. However, the center does not apply to persons who carry out commercial activities.

Experts warn that the work of such a system can slow down the work of the resources it analyzes with the help of artificial intelligence. If all videos and images are pre-filtered, the speed of Internet access will significantly slow down – users will have to wait for AI to analyze the content. In addition, the development of such a system can cost from tens to hundreds of millions of rubles, its implementation will cost billions, and maintenance in tens of millions a year, estimated co-owner of Lanit-Terkom Vladimir Ufnarovsky.
