Rosstat will for the first time evaluate the contribution of tourism to the regional economy

Rosstat will estimate the share of the tourism industry in the gross regional product (GRP) by March 2022. The publication of the indicator is also scheduled for this month, a representative of Rosstat told Vedomosti.

Evaluation of the indicator is necessary to track progress on the national project “Tourism and Hospitality Industry”. The contribution of tourism to Russia’s GDP is about 4% compared to 8.5% in France, 11.3% in China and 14.3% in Spain, it was noted in the presentation of the national project in 2020. Russia needs to double the figure by 2024 g., and by 2035 – 5 times.

Many regions are trying to evaluate tourism performance in their own way. “As a result, the data cannot be compared, which means it is impossible to see the situation in the country as a whole and make decisions about supporting the tourism industry,” said Pavel Malkov, head of Rosstat, earlier. More accurate statistics will make it possible to predict tourist flows and make timely management decisions, including by local governors, said Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.

Rosstat will consider the tourism industry from the side of supply, not demand. Analysts summarize the gross value added of all types of activities from the “Tourism” group (according to OKVED, the all-Russian classifier of types of economic activity), follows from the methodology (available from Vedomosti). This group includes, in particular, hotels, hotels, sanatoriums and resorts, souvenir trade. But it also includes taxis, passenger transportation, restaurants, gyms, museums, galleries, cinemas, the services of which are used not only by tourists.

Only part of the goods and services produced in the “Tourism” group falls on the consumption of tourists, Rosstat recognizes in the text of the methodology. “We are taking the first steps in this direction. Not having a sufficient database and not considering it possible to conduct expensive statistical studies, it was decided to evaluate tourism from the supply side at the first stage, – answered the representative of Rosstat. “We expect that in the future we will be able to achieve greater selectivity when taking into account the volume of supply and consumption of tourism services.”
