What will French fiction do once the Paris ring road is out of service? The border that its tracks trace has been crossed so often, whether for a commuter to access the heart of the capital (Untouchables2011) or for a privileged person from the twenty arrondissements to immerse themselves – out of idealism or necessity – in the reality of the crowns, small or large (The Great Spirits2017).

The first season of the series 66-5 takes up this familiar figure, but reverses the paradigm of paradises. Its heroine, Roxane Bauer (Alice Isaaz), who we briefly discover as a business lawyer in a large Parisian firm, must return to the Cité de l’Abreuvoir in Bobigny, where she grew up. Contrary to what the first sequences might lead us to believe, the young woman is not chased out of Parisian Eden: she returns to the green paradise of her childhood, to her truth which will be revealed throughout this first season, that of a pugnacious criminal lawyer, ready to take unreasonable risks to assert that her place is there, among her people.

This first inversion of perspective is accompanied by another, even more profound one. The bag of trouble into which Roxane Bauer first puts her hand, then her entire arm, will also seem familiar: a cocaine importation affair that goes wrong, a city boss who must answer for the incident to sponsors merciless, a police officer who has forgotten everything about the code of criminal procedure…

Women in charge

Roxane is ejected from the business firm where she worked when her husband, colleague and son of the founder, Samuel (Eric Pucheu), is accused of rape by an intern. Despite her marital status, she is marginalized in the defense strategy put in place by the Bauer firm, just when, following a combination of circumstances, a small dealer from Abreuvoir, Rudy (Melvin Boomer), chooses her to defend him. The case is investigated by Judge Bokobza (Rani Bheemuck), who relies on the work of Captain Morand (Victor Pontecorvo).

To get closer to the Bobigny court as much as to escape her adopted environment, Roxane crashes with her childhood friend Yasmine (Nailia Harzoune), not very far from her childhood apartment, which she left after a tragedy involving his first love, Bilal (Raphael Acloque), who persevered in his vocation as a gangster.

The conventions implied by this configuration are respected – the logic of drug trafficking clashes with legal subtleties (the series borrows its title from article 66-5 of the 1971 law on the legal profession which sets the conditions of professional secrecy ). But, from the troubled husband to the graceful boss, these generally disreputable pretty boys are not in charge, despite their desire to be.
