Royal Malaysian Air Force Receives First FA-50M Jet

The Royal Malaysian Air Force received its first two advanced FA-50M light combat aircraft on October 30, 2026, marking a major milestone in the country’s military modernization program under a contract valued by manufacturer Korea Aerospace Industries at $920 million.

The first FA-50M light combat aircraft bearing the yellow-and-blue roundel of the Royal Malaysian Air Force touched down at Labuan Air Base in Sabah after completing a ferry flight from Sacheon, South Korea. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin welcomed the arrival on the ramp, witnessing a delivery that marks the formal start of fleet renewal under the air force’s Capability Development Plan 2055.

The aircraft departed South Korea on October 29, making transit stops in Jeju, the Philippines, and Labuan before continuing their journey to Kuantan. Aircraft M58-01 was piloted by KAI pilot Lee Donkyu alongside No. 15 Squadron Commanding Officer Major Mohd Jamil Awang, while aircraft M58-02 was piloted by Kim Inchul and Executive Officer Major Muhammad Ashraf Wahab.

Following their initial touchdown in Labuan, the two jets flew onward to Kuantan Airbase, landing on Sunday, November 1, 2026, in a flight witnessed by Chief of Air Force General Tan Sri Muhamad Norazlan Aris. The aircraft are scheduled to undergo final acceptance testing prior to an official handover ceremony planned for mid-November at Kuantan Air Base.

Fighter Lead-In Training and Capability Upgrades

Malaysia ordered 18 advanced FA-50M Block 20 aircraft under an agreement signed in May 2023 with Korea Aerospace Industries. The manufacturer valued the deal at approximately $920 million, with local authorities estimating the total investment at nearly RM4 billion to cover airframes, equipment, crew training, and logistics support.

We plan to acquire 18 FA-50M aircraft from South Korea. The aircraft will be stationed at Kuantan Air Base, and some will also be stationed at Labuan Air Base to strengthen air combat capabilities.

The two-seat, single-engine aircraft are built to reach speeds up to Mach 1.2 and feature significant technological enhancements over baseline variants. The Malaysian configuration includes RTX’s PhantomStrike active electronically scanned array radar, air-to-air refueling capability, provisions for the Sniper targeting pod, and expanded precision weapon options.

Personnel Training and Squadron Deployment

Preparation for the new fleet has centered on No. 15 Squadron, which maintains a complement of more than 200 personnel at Kuantan. A core group of 57 Malaysian personnel — comprising six pilots, six engineering officers, and 45 technicians — completed training programs in South Korea, with the initial six pilots finishing flight training on October 21, 2026.

The new airframes are tied directly to the planned retirement of the air force’s ageing BAE Hawk 108 and Hawk 208 fleet in 2028. Deliveries from South Korea are scheduled to proceed in stages, with six aircraft due by April 2027 and the remainder scheduled to arrive by early 2028.

Regional Defense Posture in Sabah

Speaking in Labuan, Minister Khaled addressed regional security questions concerning military developments in the southern Philippines, clarifying that Malaysia’s defense enhancements in Sabah are part of routine readiness measures rather than a direct response to foreign construction.

However, our efforts are not a reaction to what the Philippines is doing in its southern region, but part of our preparations to ensure that any escalation of tensions will have minimal impact on Malaysia.

Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Defence Minister

The Defence Ministry has not yet established the final allocation of aircraft for Labuan Air Base, noting that the exact number of FA-50Ms stationed there will be decided after the Hawk fleet is phased out in 2028. Concurrently, the government has approved the installation of new radar systems on Layang-Layang Island and increased troop numbers in Sabah, where more than 10,000 military personnel are stationed.
