On January 25, the day before Republic Day, there was a great commotion in the ‘Bikna Bahadi’ area of Patna. Clashes erupted for the second day in a row between students and police who wrote the railway exam.
The students also threw stones in retaliation as the police brutally beat the students. Several policemen were injured in the retaliatory attack by the students. Police have arrested six students involved in the protest.
There have also been reports and pictures from other districts of Bihar that railway property has been damaged. Images of protesters setting fire to a ‘dynamic dumping express machine’ have been received from Nevada, while images of train carriages being burned in Ara have been received. The protest has spread from Bihar to the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh.
Pictures and videos of students and police trying to stop the train at several places in Uttar Pradesh, including Prayagraj, have begun to emerge.
Bihar students are intensifying their protest against the Railway Recruitment Board for alleged irregularities and negligence in recruitment for various posts in the Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) section. The intensity of the student demonstration is steadily increasing.
Many trains in the state had to change the route of several trains as the train service was completely disrupted. On Monday, students stopped trains for hours at the ‘Rajendra Nagar Terminal’ in Patna.
According to the PTI news agency, the Railways has canceled the NTPC and Eleven One exams, which were completed after the violent protests. The Railways has also set up a committee to inquire into the complaints of students involved in the struggle.
Why are students protesting?
At the time of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Railways had sought applications for 35,308 NTPC posts and about one lakh three thousand posts for Group D.
During the months of February-March, students applied. The new government was formed in April-May. The provisional date was given that the examination would take place by July. But the 2019 election was not held.
Amarjeet was one of the thousands of students who protested at Patna’s Bikna Bahadi ramp. “The exam was held in 2021 and the CBT-1 (NTPC) results were released in 2022,” said Amarjeet, who spoke on behalf of the students.
At that time, the Railway Board had written in the announcement that 20 times more people would qualify for the CBT-1 (NTPC) examination than required. But now they have selected the same student for five different workplaces, he said.
Another student said that five levels (levels) have been developed in the results published by NTBC. Some have chosen five levels, some four, and some three. Some others did not even choose one even though they had good marks.
The demand of the students is that the Railways should publish ‘One Student-One Result’. Last time choice, was single choice. Then the seat separation took place in the main examination. But this time, the students say, the seats were split in the first round and the good contestants were eliminated.
The students allege that the railways are not qualified for the posts of freight guard and station master.
Amit, another student protesting in Bikna Bahadur, said, “The first mistake they made was to put the graduates together with the Intermediate (Higher Secondary Education) students. “
Amit says that the Railways has repeatedly put a student in four or five posts i.e. their names have been put in all the posts. “If a student is selected in five places and that student passes the aptitude and medical test along with the mains, what happens to that student. Where will the railways give him a job,” he questioned.
That student qualified in ten places. But if you give him only one job, nine positions will be vacant, right? He asked.
Railways may impose a lifetime ban on protesters
The Ministry of Railways has issued a warning regarding the protest and allegations of alleged misconduct in the railways. The Ministry of Railways said in a public statement that “it has come to the notice of those seeking employment in the railways to engage in illegal activities such as strikes on railway tracks, disruption of rail traffic and damage to railway property.”
Such activities show a very high level of immorality. This makes such applicants ineligible for railway jobs.
The Ministry of Railways said in a statement that such acts would be investigated with the help of videos and that police would take action against protesters involved in illegal activities and ban them from getting railway jobs for life.
Opposition parties support
The student protest has the backing of opposition leaders. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA Tej Pratap Yadav shared a picture of police firing tear gas to disperse protesters. Remember that there is only one coalition government and the Bihar Chief Minister calls himself “Sushasan Babu” (the best ruler). “
Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) MLA Sandeep Saurabh, on the other hand, who reached out to Bikna Bahadur in support of the struggling students, said in an interview with the BBC: But the RRB has only delivered the results of 3.5 lakh people, ”he said.
A person’s name is given in six stages. So that means you are backing away from your announcement. This is an injustice inflicted on students. We support the students who have come out against this, “he said.
“Students who wrote the exam gave a final warning to the government and the railways before the protests took place. Students across the country trended on Twitter. It was the number one trend, but the government ignored all the demands of the students,” Sandeep said.
“Students took to the streets as a last resort. The government is committed to violently suppressing the voices of protesters. The government must let go of its stubbornness in order to get justice for the millions of job seekers,” he said.
Here the rule of law prevails – administration
“Students say there was a mess in the exam conducted by NTPC. I will not give any opinion as to how far this is right or wrong. But it is illegal for them to do so. The magistrate-level executive officer M.S. Khan said.
“We suggested to them today that a five-member delegation go to the RRP office and present their case and engage in negotiations. But they did not listen. All the students here are acting without leadership. More violence is being inflicted. Many policemen are here. The rule of law prevails here.” That M.S. Khan added.
Students cut back slightly on Wednesday in the run-up to Republic Day. But reports from People say that’s just what’s happening.
The panel of examinees meets on Wednesday. Meanwhile, many students have declared a nationwide ‘Bharat Bandh’ on the 28th. Left-wing student organizations have called for a Bihar ballot against the new order issued in connection with the Group D exam.
