The Central Government has informed that more than 35,000 crore rupees which were not withdrawn from the banks have been sent to the Reserve Bank. The owners of these bank accounts often die and the money remains in this way.

In this case, up to February 2023, an amount of Rs 35,012 crore has been sent to the Reserve Bank from the accounts lying unused in public sector banks for more than 10 years, Minister of State for Finance Bhagwat Karath said in Parliament.

This amount of Rs 35,012 crore has been sent to RBI from around 10.24 crore bank accounts which have been lying dormant for 10 years. The maximum remittances were Rs 8,086 crore from SBI Bank, Rs 5,340 crore from Punjab National Bank, Rs 4,558 crore from Canara Bank and Rs 3,904 crore from Bank of Baroda.

Minister of State for Finance Bhagwat Karat has said in the Parliament that banks including SBI are providing all kinds of assistance to distribute the money of the deceased to their families and heirs.

He said that orders for this are also being given to the banks. So far, banks are conducting special camps to trace the owners of inactive bank accounts, their families and heirs, the minister said.
