How the rivalry between RTL and ProSieben intensifies

RTL attacks ProSieben – with show formats that were once developed for the competitor. The programs “Blamieren oder Kassieren” and “Beat the Best” will be broadcast on RTL in the future. At the center of the coup are Stefan Raab and Elton.

Stefan Raab was once the face of ProSieben. Until Raab didn’t feel like his show “TV Total” anymore – and only worked as a producer. But then no longer exclusively for the television group ProSiebenSat.1. But also sometimes for the competitor. For example, with the streaming format “Daily freshly roasted” for RTL+, which was not very successful. Or with “RTL high diving”. Raab had once implemented the concept “Celebrities jump more or less elegantly into the water from ten meters” for ProSieben.

Now the next blow against ProSiebenSat.1: RTL has just announced that the shows “Blamieren oder Kassieren” and “Schlag den Beste” – both Raab formats, both formerly in the ProSieben program – will belong to the Cologne station in the future. Elton, Raab’s longtime “show intern” at “TV Total”, was hired as moderator. RTL sold the takeover of the format as a “sensation”.

And not only that – even the house band of “TV Total”, the Heavytones, will play at “Blamieren oder Kassieren”. At the same time, the band provides the musical accompaniment for “TV Total”, which is now presented by Sebastian Puffpaff for ProSieben. That may confuse viewers – and will probably annoy ProSieben.

Stefan Raab, who has not appeared as a moderator since his departure, serves the two largest private broadcasters simultaneously as a producer and entrepreneur. The formats are produced by his company Raab TV, which belongs to the entertainment group Banijay via the company Brainpool.

Armageddon Championship Series

The show “Blamieren oder Kassieren” – a kind of offshoot of “TV Total” – will run for the first time on RTL in autumn. Here, two celebrities compete against a studio contestant in quiz rounds. The show “Beat the Best” will be shown in the first half of 2024. According to RTL, celebrities compete against each other in four episodes in different duels.

ProSieben will probably not let the anger show – on Wednesday the station itself sent a program announcement, which could also be interpreted as an answer to RTL: “You don’t scare me!” It’s about the show “Beat the Star”, where next Saturday Nilam Farooq against Rebecca Mir. It moderates Elton.

This double constellation will probably not last long – but it depends on the contracts that have been concluded.

Both ProSiebenSat.1 and RTL Deutschland are struggling with declining advertising revenues as a result of inflation. At the same time, both entertainment groups have to invest in their streaming offers – and in well-known TV faces. Joko and Klaas are still on the side of ProSieben, RTL can fall back on stars like Thomas Gottschalk, Günther Jauch or Dieter Bohlen, among others. New stars are urgently needed.
