The pillar of the XV of France was judged this Tuesday, May 30 for having hit his wife on Friday in Montpellier. However, the court did not order his continued detention.

The pillar of the XV of France Mohamed Haouas was sentenced this Tuesday, May 30 by the Montpellier court to one year in prison, without continued detention. A lighter sentence compared to the requisitions of the prosecutor, who had asked for eighteen months in prison, including one year suspended probation, and his continued detention.

Married and father of two children, the player from the Montpellier club, reigning French champion, was arrested at the end of the day on Friday May 26 and placed in pre-trial detention since Sunday May 28. Haouas was accused of hitting his wife Friday in the middle of the day after he saw her smoking a cigarette in front of the shopping center where she works, then forcing him into a car. The assault took place in front of multiple witnesses. His gesture was captured by CCTV cameras, hence his appearance in immediate appearance on Tuesday.

“She has the right to smoke, […] but the problem is that she lied to me, […] and I said to myself that if she can lie for the cigarette, she can lie for something else”tried to justify the rugby player during his trial. “I imagined things, married guys cheat on their wives, I love her, I was scared”he continued. “I got carried away, I really blame myself”continued the Montpellier player, minimizing his gestures: first a “little tripper”, to knock her down, then “a little slap, like that”.

Before his testimony, his wife came to testify, explaining that she had been “shocked”: “It’s the first time that Mohamed lays his hand on me”, did she say. And if her husband doesn’t like her to smoke, “It’s because he was traumatized by a friend who had cancer.”

No World Cup?

“If they are established, the facts alleged against Mohamed Haouas are unacceptable”, assured the Minister of Sports Amélie Oudéa-Castéra on Saturday, saying that “all the consequences which would be imposed” should then be “drawn”, “both in criminal and sporting terms”.

Selected 16 times in the jersey of the France team, the Montpellier colossus (1.85 m, 123 kg) could see his career threatened. He should especially miss the Mondial-2023 in France which is held from September 8 to October 28. This case comes indeed a few days before the announcement of the 42 selected by Fabien Galthié, on June 21.

The player who has been playing since the start of his career at Montpellier Hérault Rugby recently signed a three-year contract with AS Clermont Auvergne. A transfer suspended for the time being. Contacted by The Teamthe Clermont leaders explained the situation. “Until we have information on the facts, we will not comment on the case”they announced.

In February 2022, the rugby player had already been sentenced to eighteen months in prison, suspended, for burglaries of tobacco shops in Montpellier, in 2014. On May 12, during a second trial, for his participation in a violent fight on January 1, 2014, the prosecution had requested a two-year suspended sentence. The deliberation in this case is expected on June 30.
