Last meeting for the two teams in this group phase, Fiji (3rd in Group C) faces Portugal (5th), this Sunday at the Toulouse Stadium. The Flying Fijians have won two matches out of three (victory against Australia and Georgia and defeat against Wales with double offensive and defensive bonus) and have 10 points after 3 days. They are only missing a measly little point to validate their ticket for the quarter-finals, a stage of the competition that they have already reached in 1987 and 2007.

For their part, the Portuguese are last with two defeats (against Wales and Australia) and a draw against Georgia. They only have 2 small points on the table, without any offensive or defensive bonuses but have made a very good impression so far.

The Portuguese, although valiant and courageous, will return to the field without having the slightest chance of qualifying. However, there is no reason to expect Patrice Lagisquet’s men to let themselves be defeated; a victory this Sunday would give them exceptional success.

On the Fiji side, the situation is very different. In this group C, nothing is decided yet and the Pacific players intend to secure their qualification in the quarter-finals. The Flying Fijians, who have made a good impression since the start of the tournament, can therefore qualify with a simple small victory this Sunday against the bottom of the group. If the Fijians win, then the Australians would be eliminated from the competition.

Fiji could therefore face England in the quarter-finals! For Simon Raiwalui’s men, the context remains special, one of their number, Josua Tuisova, having remained in the group to hope to qualify his country, despite the death of his son. The meeting will be followed on Sunday evening (kick-off at 9 p.m.) on M 6.
