It is a decision taken “to avoid crowds and queues that are too long” and new images questioning the organization of the Rugby World Cup. According to our information, the Northern prefecture has decided by decree to close “drinking establishments and takeaway stands selling drinks and food for immediate consumption” located within a radius of 500 meters around the Pierre-Mauroy stadium. of Villeneuve-d’Ascq one hour before the kick-off of the match between the XV of France and Uruguay on Thursday evening (9 p.m.).

The objective, clearly stated by the decree that Le Parisien-Aujourd’hui in France was able to consult, is not to reproduce the queues of supporters observed on Saturday, in Bordeaux for Ireland-Romania and in particular in Marseille for England-Argentina . At the Vélodrome, several hundred supporters of the two teams missed the kick-off of the match.

“Incidents have been noted at the Vélodrome stadium in Marseille (…) in particular due to the massive influx of people parking in the drinking establishments located on the stadium square, thus making access difficult and time-consuming and the effectiveness of the measures control”, underlines the order issued by the prefecture. In its press release regarding these queues, France 2023 for its part pointed out problems in directing the flow of spectators in transport.

Several thousand Britons expected for the match

Around 50,000 people are expected around the Pierre-Mauroy stadium on Thursday evening for the Blues’ second match, including 12% British, according to the metropolis’s attractiveness agency, Hello Lille. Clearly, these spectators will no longer have access to the bars, refreshment bars or even the food trucks on the square from 8 p.m. until 9:30 p.m., half an hour after the start of the match. They will, however, be open after the match, to spread out the departures of supporters and not overload the Lille metro.

However, they will be able to consume inside the enclosure, once they have passed through the security gates. It now remains to be seen how the refreshment bars on the site will be able to absorb this massive arrival of spectators. Something to watch out for, as large queues at these stands and even beer shortages were noted during the opening weekend.

For the moment, no national instructions have been given by the Ministry of the Interior. But other prefects could follow suit, while seven other Rugby World Cup matches take place between Friday and Sunday.
