Tom Curry is set. The English third row received a three-match suspension, two of which were firm, after his expulsion against Argentina on Saturday, the English Rugby Federation announced in a press release on Tuesday. He will miss the matches against Japan on Sunday and Chile on September 23, but could return against Samoa on October 7, in the final group match, provided he follows an awareness program with coaches.

The number 7 of the XV de la Rose was sent off after three minutes of play, following a head-to-head clash against the Puma Juan Cruz Mallia in Marseille. First punished with a yellow card, the gesture was revisited by the bunker and turned into a red. This numerical inferiority did not prevent the English from winning (27-10), thanks in particular to an imperial George Ford.

The minimum sanction for this type of action is a six-match suspension, but the Independent Disciplinary Commission took into account several mitigating circumstances. “The admission of the fault, an exemplary disciplinary record, an apology to the player (…) reduced the sanction by half,” indicated the Federation. Despite this shock, Toulouse’s Mallia was only replaced for a few minutes and took his place at the back in the 10th minute.

One more absence for the English, already deprived of Owen Farrell at the start of the competition for the same reason. The opener will be back against Chile and will not be able to face Japan on Sunday evening in Nice. Also suspended against the Argentines, third row Billy Vunipola will however be able to face the Brave Blossoms.
