Danger does not always lie where we expect it. The Scotsman David Cherry had the bitter experience of this, since he had to withdraw from the rest of the World Cup… after falling down the stairs of a hotel during a rest day. The hooker suffers from a concussion and his unavailability, estimated at at least 12 days, forced the Scottish management to exclude him from the selection.

A tile all the more damaging as Cherry emerged unscathed from the extremely rough match against South Africa on Sunday, during which he came on in the 56th minute. At the age of 32, it was the first World Cup match for this Edinburgh player, who briefly played for Nice, then in Federal 2, in 2017-18.

To compensate for this injury, the experienced Stuart McInally was recalled. The hooker with 49 capes was already training with the Chardon XV, in view of a possible absence of Ewan Ashman (also concussed), but had not been included in the list of 33 participants. He is now there and plans to retire, at 33, at the end of this World Cup.
