The Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome gave an update this morning on the clinical conditions of the 93-year-old cardinal, who had been in the hospital since last Saturday for chest pain

“Quiet night”, with health conditions “confirmed to be stable”. An update came this morning from the cardiac intensive care unit of the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome on Cardinal Camillo Ruini, who was urgently admitted to the facility last Saturday after chest pain. The checks and treatments, the hospital informs, continue for the 93-year-old cardinal, who showed from the first medical bulletin that he was “alert and cooperating”.
Born in Sassuolo, in the province of Modena, Cardinal Ruini completed his philosophical and theological studies in Rome, at the Pontifical Gregorian University, as a student of the Almo Collegio Capranica, and received a license in philosophy and theology. He was ordained a priest on 8 December 1954, after a long period of teaching in the diocese of Reggio Emilia On 16 May 1983 he was appointed bishop with the title of Nepte and assistant bishop for the dioceses of Reggio Emilia and Guastalla.
In 1985 he was elected a member of the Bishops’ Commission for Education, Culture and Catholic Schools. On 28 June 1986 John Paul II appointed him Secretary General of the Italian Bishops’ Conference. Pope Wojtyla again chose him on 17 January 1991 as Vicar General of the diocese of Rome, created him a cardinal and appointed him President of the Italian Bishops’ Conference. He held the position until March 7, 2007, when Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation because he had reached the age limit. The following year, in 2008, he completed his ministry, after reaching the age limit again, in the role of Vicar General for the Diocese of Rome and Archpriest of the Pope’s Lateran Archbasilica.
From January 2008 to January 2013, within the CEI, he was President of the Committee for the cultural project. From 2010 to 2014, Cardinal Ruini headed the International Commission of Inquiry on Medjugorje established by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He participated in the April 2005 conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI, and became President of the Scientific Committee of the Vatican Foundation Joseph Ratzinger – Benedict XVI for the first five years, 2010-2015.
