Thousands of people around the world have invested millions of rupees in OneCoin. But they took the plunge after learning that they were being investigated for cryptocurrency fraud. Ruja left the country after amassing more than $4 billion in investments.
Ruja Ignatova, a native of Bulgaria, went missing in 2017. Ruja Coin started selling since 2014. The biggest difference is that blockchain technology was not used to conduct the coin sale. This later created doubts in the minds of investors.
“Initially, people were very impressed with OneCoin. “They took advantage of this and planned the plan exactly,” the BBC news agency reported, quoting Damian Williams, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan. They received significant investment from countries like Germany, South Korea and Hong Kong. A huge amount of money has poured into their cryptocurrency from many countries believing Ruja’s word.
She has been charged in eight cases including internet fraud and investment fraud in the United States. The FBI has also offered a reward of $100,000 (roughly Rs 78.9 lakh) for information about Ignatova. Ignatova’s scam came to light through an online program hosted by Jamie Bartlett on BBC Sounds. The program was produced by Georgia Kat. Ignatova was last seen in Athens. But many believe that they are not alive.
Two years after the disappearance they still had the support of other influential people. Jamie Bartlett also revealed that Ignatova sunk with at least $500 million. Bartlett revealed that they may be carrying fake IDs and may have undergone plastic surgery to avoid detection.
