Nearly 20 million people use the bicycle with some frequency according to the latest Bicycle Barometer. 30% of the users of this means of transport do so daily to go to work or go to the study center.

Like other drivers, cyclists must know and respect the rules of the road. While riding a bike, it is totally forbidden to use a mobile phone. Headphones connected to receivers or sound players are also prohibited. Headphones limit hearing ability and can cause distractions. If we fail to comply with this rule, we can be fined 200 euros.

Traffic light signals, like the vertical ones (stop, give way, limited speed…), are for all drivers, including cyclists. Skipping a traffic light can result in a fine of up to 500 euros. Contrary to what many cyclists think, bikes do not have priority at pedestrian crossings (not to be confused with cycle crossings). To cross a pedestrian crossing, it is mandatory to get off the bike and cross it on foot. Crossing a pedestrian crossing without getting off the bike is sanctioned with a €200 fine.

The protective helmet is mandatory only for those under 16 years of age. For other cyclists it is only recommended and always advisable.

Besides, as explained by the DGT, the cyclist can detect sudden braking by alternately moving the arm up and down, with short and fast movements. This is an advisable signal to avoid reaching, in no case mandatory, since it requires letting go of the handlebars in a very quick reaction. And for safety, in the city and on the highway, it is always recommended –not mandatory– to use the bike lanes whenever they are available. Cyclists have right of way over motor vehicles when traveling on a bike lane, through a lane for cyclists or on a duly marked shoulder.

On bicycles, it is only allowed to carry a passenger up to 7 years of age, in an additional approved seat, as long as the driver is of legal age. In addition to not being safe, they can fine us 100 euros.

Whenever they circulate at night, in underpasses or through tunnels, cyclists must have their lights on in front and behind to see and make themselves visible (100 euros fine). Bicyclists must also yield right-of-way at a properly marked crosswalk and when turning onto another road and pedestrians are crossing it, even if there is no crosswalk. Not respecting the pedestrians’ priority of passage entails a penalty of €200.

Apart from these rules, since Norauto They remind us of 5 maxims that every bicycle user must put into practice on a day-to-day basis to guarantee their safety and avoid any unforeseen events.

1

Always know and comply with traffic regulations.

To use the bicycle it is not necessary to obtain a permit and, therefore, the user is not required to have knowledge of the regulations. However, it is very necessary to know and comply with the rules to guarantee safety and respect other road users.

2

Establish routes, choose the most appropriate and safest routes for bicycle users.

Bicycle paths or bike lanes are the safest place. However, there are not enough. It is recommended to plan the routes and choose those roads that are in better condition and with less traffic. Of course, the bicycle should not be used on the sidewalk and you must always get off if you are going to use a pedestrian crossing.

3

The bicycle must always be in good condition.

Frequently check elements such as tires, brakes, steering, chains, lighting, cables, frame… The bicycle must react adequately to unforeseen events.

4

Equip yourself safely.

Of course, you should always wear a helmet, even if it is only mandatory on interurban roads and for children under 16 years of age in the city. The helmet protects the head, one of the most vulnerable areas of the body, against falls or accidents. You should also wear comfortable, breathable clothing in bright colors to be more visible. If it has reflective elements, much better.

5

Avoid all distractions.

Mobile phones should not be used while riding a bicycle. Nor should you wear helmets and listen to music, as it isolates from the sounds of road traffic.

More than one collision can be avoided thanks to sight and hearing.
