As the war of words between the ruling and opposition parties intensified ahead of the meeting between People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon and Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung on the 25th, working-level negotiations between the two sides fell through again on the 21st. People Power Party leader Park Jung-ha’s chief of staff, who was in charge of the working-level negotiations for the ruling and opposition party leaders’ meeting, and Democratic Party leader Lee Hae-sik’s chief of staff did not meet again today, following the previous day. Both sides stated that “our schedules did not match up,” and that they would continue to coordinate the meeting schedule.

The People Power Party, which had proposed to broadcast the entire meeting live the day before, pressured the Democratic Party, which responded by saying, “Unless they are afraid that Representative Lee’s habitual change of words will be revealed to the public, there is no reason to refuse.” The Democratic Party counterattacked, saying, “Representative Han is trying to do a ‘show’ rather than a meeting,” and “Isn’t he suggesting a TV debate so that he can emerge as a presidential candidate?”

On the 21st, Representative Han met with reporters and said, “I don’t think it’s unpleasant for the people to see the ruling and opposition party representatives talking,” and “It’s not unpleasant for the people to see the process of discussion and how they are viewing issues; rather, it’s a good thing.” In a commentary, People Power Party senior spokesperson Kwak Gyu-taek mentioned that Representative Lee requested a “public policy dialogue” with People Power Party leader Kim Ki-hyun last year, and said, “Are Representative Lee last year and Representative Lee this year different people?” and “If they don’t regard the ruling and opposition party representatives’ meeting as a stepping stone to a meeting with the president, they should stop talking about ‘discomfort’ and engage in serious discussions.”

It has been reported that the majority opinion on this representative’s side is that they should not accept the live broadcast proposal. A key member of this representative’s side said, “Live broadcasting is nonsense. So, isn’t it natural that the ruling party will react with ‘ridiculousness’?” People Power Party lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun said on this day, “Are you saying that you will hold the first round of the presidential TV debate?”

Under this atmosphere, the party leadership also poured out criticism. Supreme Council member Lee Eun-ju said, “This is behavior that does not distinguish between discussions and meetings,” and Supreme Council member Jeon Hyeon-hee said, “Isn’t it just a ‘show’ focused on showing off to the public in order to hide the fact that he is a powerless representative with no authority?” Supreme Council member Kim Min-seok said, “(The party representative meeting) is not a TV debate,” but added, “Since the live broadcast on TV is not that important, (Representative Han) can think about it if he really wants to.”

There was also a war of nerves over whether to bring up the ‘Special Prosecutor Act for Private First Class Chae’. While Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae pressured again, saying, “I expect (Representative Han) to have a specific position on the Special Prosecutor Act and come to the meeting,” People Power Party Supreme Council member Kim Jae-won insisted, “The Democratic Party’s goal is to drag it into a special prosecution situation,” and “We need to fundamentally review it.” A ruling party leadership official said, “Representative Han is caught between Yongsan and the opposition party.”

One representative shared on Facebook an article in which the female cellist who initiated the “Cheongdam-dong drinking party suspicion” claimed at trial that day that “the suspicion itself is false,” and said, “Politicians should not be swayed by false propaganda and fake news, but should think about the future of the people and the youth. I would like to think about the lives of the Democratic Party and the people together at this ruling and opposition party representative meeting.”
