Rumors of a remake for the beloved PS1 classic Final Fantasy IX have been circulating since a leak in 2019. While journalist Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb has confirmed the project’s existence, recent reports have begun speculating on the gameplay mechanics of the remake.

Some outlets have suggested that the Final Fantasy IX remake will utilize an “ATB turn-based system.” However, Grubb himself clarified in a tweet that he never made such a statement. He stated, “I haven’t talked about FF9 in weeks, but these rumors keep bouncing back and forth between blogs and Twitter and YouTube as if I’ve said something new or different. I just said it’s definitely real, which of course it is.”

While the specific details of the remake remain unknown, it is clear that Square Enix is actively working on bringing back classic games. In addition to Final Fantasy IX, a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics is also in the works. During a recent shareholders meeting, Square Enix expressed their interest in exploring more remasters and remakes, indicating that there may be more surprises in store for fans.

The leak that initially revealed the Final Fantasy IX remake also mentioned several other games that have since been confirmed. These include Kingdom Hearts 4, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Street Fighter 6, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Tekken 8, The Talos Principle 2, and Helldivers 2. It seems that Square Enix has a host of exciting projects in their pipeline.

As for the release date of the Final Fantasy IX remake, it remains uncertain. Fans eagerly await any official announcements from Square Enix. In the meantime, speculation and predictions for the game’s arrival continue to generate buzz in gaming communities.
