Runa by Lali Ayguadé Company reinforces the powerful program of the Itálica Festival in 2023

On June 26 it will be performed at the farmhouse of the four (Sevilla), Speech, by the hand of Lali Ayguadé Company. This is one of the pieces that are part of the program for this edition of the Festival of Italica.

My work is based on exploring the abstraction of dance or movement, putting it in a concrete situation that turns it into something more conceptual. That allows me to emphasize the feelings and emotions of the performers on stage. Movement may seem very abstract, but as humans, we use something very tangible which is our body. The link between reality and imagination is something fundamental in my research. As performers, we have the opportunity to play with this fine line where nothing is completely neither one nor the other, so I create this concept in bodies, and also in space. Our bodies end up small in space, but our imagination gives us the opportunity to go beyond our physical borders and break the limits. Our mind has an underestimated power and it is a wonderful tool that makes everything you connect with your body become another path to seek and achieve virtuosity. But it takes time to get it; in fact, the concept of time is also something I like to play with. I feel a lot of adrenaline when I see speed because as a performer, I can feel the effort and complexity of the path that leads to it. But it has to be managed well so as not to disappear into it: to emphasize it, you need to have silences and moments of slowness in the body, which is even more powerful and also difficult to accept and achieve. As a creator and artists, when you find a concept to play with, it’s always important to play with its opposite as well. It gives you a greater range of opportunities and lets your body and mind show the beauty of movement through a simple gesture.

Therefore, we are facing an unavoidable event that, fortunately, the Itálica Festival has brought to those of us who live in Andalusia. And I am not only saying because this company has obtained its corresponding recognitions for this and many other productions, but because this is one of those opportunities to find out what is happening in contemporary dance in other latitudes of Spain, so that we can see ourselves, and let us not think that what is happening in other parts of Europe is the best we can hope for. It is enough to delve with confidence that this land has formed talent that is going to “try their luck”, others return to constitute their own projects with what they have gathered from various experiences, others come and go, etc… . “Tales from another world. From another era. In this chaotic landscape, two humans investigate among the rubble, trying to reimagine, to feel again what once was, what they once were. Intuiting the past Innocent people who, now, turn those ruins into allies, into games to understand reality. Runa reveals the beauty of that fragile past, of which not much remains, to cling to life. Through abstract movement and the body in dimensions and relationships to weight, these characters return us to the essence of what we are: beings affected by time. How to move on when the Rune is in the mind?”
