RUSADA: WADA’s decision on the Moscow laboratory will not affect Russian sports

by time news

The decision of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to ban the Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory from analyzing blood samples will not affect athletes and the operational activities of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA). Natalia Sokolova, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of RUSADA, told TASS about this.

The day before, the WADA Executive Committee revoked the accreditation of the Moscow laboratory for testing athletes’ blood due to the laboratory’s non-compliance with the international laboratory standard and its code of ethics. The laboratory has been suspended since January 2020. The Russian side was given the opportunity to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) within 21 days from the date of the court decision, but RUSADA refused this procedure.

“The formalization of the decision to suspend 2020 has no effect on Russian athletes and all domestic sports. Nothing changes for RUSADA’s operational activities, since samples have been sent to European laboratories for analysis for several years now, ”said the Chairman of the RUSADA Supervisory Board.

According to her, the new management bodies of RUSADA are maximally concentrated on restoring the agency’s status by December 2022. “In the interests of Russian athletes, all RUSADA governing bodies need to concentrate their efforts on fulfilling the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne and passing the WADA check in order to return our athletes the opportunity to participate in all world tournaments using the Russian anthem and flag,” added Ms Sokolova.

In December 2019, RUSADA was deprived of compliance status due to manipulations with data from a Moscow laboratory. Against this background, Russian athletes were banned from participating in international competitions as the national teams of Russia, as well as from performing under the flag, anthem and other national symbols.

In December 2020, the International Court of Arbitration reduced the period of sanctions to two years and deprived RUSADA of the status of compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code. The restrictions will be valid until December 16, 2022. During this period, Russia is also prohibited from hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games and World Championships.
