The 139th anniversary of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia was celebrated today in Ruse with a festive ceremony in front of the Monument to those who died in the Serbo-Bulgarian War, reports the municipal press center.

Under the sounds of solemn marches performed by the Municipal Brass Band with conductor Dimcho Rubchev, the guard of honor welcomed the citizens to the square “Al. Battenberg”.

The mayor of Ruse municipality Pencho Milkov, regional governor Dragomir Draganov and their deputies, the chairman of the municipal council Academician Hristo Beloev, representatives of political forces, deputies and students from Ruse schools paid tribute to the dead.

Mayor Pencho Milkov and regional governor Dragomir Draganov spoke on the occasion of the anniversary.

“What lessons can we learn from the act of Unification? First of all, clear and great national causes must be put before the Bulgarian people. Work for unification – not for uniformity in thinking, but for unity in the feeling of common goals, for brotherhood and mutual aid. We must realize that Bulgaria can have foreign policy successes only with the simultaneous presence of a strong army and flexible diplomacy,” said the mayor.

He called for patriotism to be our compass as a society in times of turmoil and disorientation.

His Eminence Bishop Makariy of Glavinitsa, vicar of the Metropolitan of Ruse, and priests from the Holy Metropolis of Ruse, offered a funeral prayer in memory of the dead and a prayer of thanksgiving in honor of the Unification of Bulgaria.

Borislav Apostolov, the actor from the “Sava Ognyanov” Drama Theater, hosted the ceremony.

The celebration ended with the laying of wreaths and flowers by official institutions, political parties, organizations and citizens.
