Accompanied by his wife, Laura Gallacher, who has three children with the star, Brand walked into London’s Southwark Crown Court on Monday morning. The 51-year-old wore a grey suit, a white unbuttoned shirt with a brown neckerchief underneath, brown boots and sunglasses, which he removed as he passed assembled press cameras outside the building. Hand in hand with his wife, he declined to answer shouted questions from reporters before entering the courthouse.

When the morning recess arrived, Brand walked over to the edge of the dock to exchange glances and offer a smile to his relatives. While the trial proceeds, he is out on bail and pleads not guilty to three charges of rape, one charge of indecent assault and three counts of sexual assault.

Mr Justice Bennathan Oversees Jury Selection

The first order of business on Monday involved selecting jurors who will sit on the case. Mr Justice Bennathan addressed an initial group of 50 prospective jurors, asking if they had seen a Channel 4 documentary or read a newspaper article concerning allegations about Brand published in 2023.

“We are about to start the trial of one Mr Russell Brand. Many of you will have heard of him. About three years ago, there was a TV programme and was a long article in the Times newspaper in which some allegations were made against him of sexual misconduct. They were allegations he firmly denied.”

The judge instructed any prospective juror who remembered seeing the media coverage to raise a hand. The judge then dismissed six members of the jury panel who identified that they remembered the reports. Jury selection was expected to continue on Tuesday, with the prosecution opening its case against Brand on Wednesday morning. Depending on how proceedings unfold, the trial is estimated to last up to 10 weeks.

Police Investigate Allegations Spanning a Decade

The allegations involve six women and span a decade from 1999 to 2009. The Crown Prosecution Service brought the charges across two separate decisions in April and December of the previous year, following an investigation launched by the Metropolitan Police. Detectives opened their inquiry after receiving allegations stemming from a joint investigation in September 2023 by Channel 4’s Dispatches, The Times, and The Sunday Times.

Chief Crown Prosecutor Jaswant Narwal noted at the time charges were announced that prosecutors carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast.

  • Out of the total accusations, four separate women are connected to five initial charges—specifically two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one of indecent assault—regarding events that occurred in London and Bournemouth from 1999 through 2005.
  • Two additional charges of rape and sexual assault relate to two further women and are alleged to have taken place in London in 2009.

Brand Denies Wrongdoing as Trial Begins

Brand has consistently denied all allegations of wrongdoing. In April 2025, he posted a video statement addressing the initial charges.

Before the criminal proceedings began, Brand rose to fame in British television during the early 2000s, hosting shows such as Celebrity Big Brother’s Big Mouth and BBC Radio 2 programs, later crossing into Hollywood films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. During the 2000s, he established himself as one of Britain’s best-known comedians and secured prominent presenting duties, including hosting the 2007 Brit Awards, Comic Relief, and the MTV Music Video Awards. In 2006, he began hosting a weekly Saturday night program titled The Russell Brand Show on BBC Radio 2, which attracted roughly 400,000 listeners on average before coming to an abrupt halt in 2008 when he quit following offensive voice messages left by him and entertainer Jonathan Ross targeting actor Andrew Sachs. His career also included writing the best-selling UK autobiography My Booky Wook: A Memoir of Sex, Drugs, and Stand-Up and the 2017 self-help guide Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions. In recent years, he stepped away from mainstream media, moved to Florida, and built a substantial online following focused on wellness, conspiracy theories, and religious devotion. The high-profile trial has also generated extensive companion media coverage, including Channel 4 News launching a daily podcast series hosted by Culture Correspondent Minnie Stephenson to follow daily courtroom arguments and legal developments.
