Russell Brand Convicted of Rape and Sexual Assault Charges

Russell Brand was convicted on Thursday of rape and sexual assault charges involving four women following a trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court, and now faces a significant prison sentence when he is sentenced on Monday.

Jury Convicts Actor of Multiple Sex Offenses

A jury of eight men and four women deliberated for more than eight hours over two days before reaching its verdict on November 5, 2026. The British actor and comedian, 51, was convicted of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault concerning allegations dating back more than 20 years.

Judge Joel Bennathan rejected a bail request for Brand following the verdict due to the possibility that he might flee, and had him taken into custody. The judge warned that Brand faces a custodial sentence of some length when he returns to court on Monday, November 9, 2026. Judge Bennathan noted that while he regretted the hardship caused to Brand’s children, that hardship stemmed from the serious criminal offending committed by their father.

Brand was cleared of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. When the bail denial was issued, he gestured to his lawyers that he was all right and repeatedly told them, I’m good, I’m good, I’m good, before court officers took him away. Throughout the four-week trial, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones characterized Brand as a ruthless, calculating, and manipulative sexual predator.

Court Details Convictions Spanning a Decade

The criminal case encompassed allegations spanning a decade from 1999 to 2009. The specific convictions delivered by the Southwark Crown Court jury cover four separate incidents:

  • 2004: Brand was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman during a birthday party at a London bar, though he was cleared of orally raping her in a restroom.
  • 2004 or 2005: He was found guilty of kissing and groping another woman at a London radio station.
  • Early 2009: He was convicted of anally raping a young fan he met backstage after picking her from the crowd following a gig at London’s Hammersmith Apollo. Court testimony noted that the victim begged him to stop, telling the court, I felt like I couldn’t speak or breathe, the amount of pain.
  • 2009: The final conviction involved sexually assaulting a different woman who stated that the comedian demanded a massage and pressed his face into her groin during the recording of an advertisement.

Brand was acquitted of two other charges: raping a woman in a hotel room during the Labour Party’s annual conference in Bournemouth in 1999, and attempting to indecently assault a woman by dragging her into the men’s bathroom at MTV’s London office.

During his testimony from the witness box, Brand denied all charges and stated that his entire life had been consumed by the accusations. My entire life has been consumed by these events, these allegations, these accusations, he testified, adding that he had been abandoned by friends and colleagues. His lawyers argued that the complainants were undermined by waiting years to go to police, following the broadcast of a 2023 Channel 4 Dispatches documentary that contained anonymous allegations against him. His wife, Laura, testified as a character witness in his defense.

Police Praise Complainants After Guilty Verdict

Following the verdict, Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of London’s Metropolitan Police praised the complainants in the case. Brand used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women, Furphy said. As his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement. He described the verdict as a testament to the extraordinary courage, resilience and determination of the women who came forward and reported what happened to them.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley stated that he would not be surprised if many more alleged victims emerged in the wake of the conviction. Speaking on broadcast media, Sir Mark noted that high-profile cases frequently produce an upsurge in reporting by giving other victims the confidence to speak out, according to The Independent.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Brand is under investigation for two further rape allegations, with case files already submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service. Sir Mark urged anyone else with allegations to contact authorities, noting that the investigation that secured the convictions involved speaking to 100 witnesses and taking 400 statements across a sizable inquiry.
