Burundi and Russia: An unwavering friendship in the face of international challenges

Saint Petersburg (Russia), July 27, 2023 – Aligning with the Foreign Policy of Burundi, in particular that of Defence. Visiting a friendly country, the courageous President of Burundi, HE Ndayishimiye Evariste (General Major)is in Russia in a totally relaxed and serene atmosphere.

This Thursday, HE Ndayishimiye joined his African counterparts to participate in the official opening of the 2nd edition of the Russia-Africa Summit. Prior to this event, a warm meeting took place where HE Ndayishimiye exchanged a friendly handshake with the illustrious Russian President, HE Vladimir Putin.

This modern-day hero, alongside China, played a key role in creating the historic multipolar global alternative of BRICS [1]. Thanks to this initiative, a new wind is blowing on the world, thus responding to the pressing needs of the planet in search of innovative solutions. The BRICS vision now offers a new, open perspective and hope for a brighter future, marked by enhanced international cooperation and opportunities for progress for all member countries and beyond.

On Wednesday, during an interview granted to the Tass agency, HE Ndayishimiye underlined the strong ties that unite Burundi and Russia.

In 2015, Burundi faced the GUAN [2] who tried a color revolution in April-May, followed bya failed military coup attempt on May 13, 2015 aimed at overthrowing the CNDD-FDD regime. During this critical period, Russia showed solidarity by providing crucial diplomatic and socio-economic support to Burundi. This valuable assistance made it possible to deal with the humanitarian war unleashed against Burundi from 2015 to 2021.
Since then, Burundi has expressed deep gratitude to HE Vladimir Putin’s Russia for this invaluable human gesture that helped preserve stability and security in Burundi. This strong and enduring friendship between the two nations endures to this day, marking an example of fruitful cooperation in difficult times. Gratitude towards Russia remains anchored in the hearts of the Burundian people, testifying to the importance of ties between nations and the positive impact of international solidarity in times of crisis.
