- Evacuations continue in the Kherson region, two days after the destruction of the hydroelectric dam from Kakhovka, in southern Ukraine. As of Wednesday evening, more than 5,900 people had been evacuated from flooded areas : nearly 1,900 by Ukrainian relief, and more than 4,000, announced the authorities installed by Moscow. Thirty localities were flooded, including ten in the area under the control of Russian forces.
- White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said the United States was assessing responsibility for the plant’s destruction, but that Moscow was to blame. “Russia has no business in Ukraine. This dam was under the control of Russia, and it bears the responsibility for the destruction caused by this war.she said.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday lamented the lack of humanitarian aid from the United Nations and the Red Cross after the destruction of the dam. Emmanuel Macron, for his part, announced on Wednesday the sending, “in the next few hours”of a “help to meet immediate needs” from Ukraine.
- Russian President Vladimir Putin, for his part, denounced a “barbaric act” from Ukraineduring a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
- Volodymyr Zelensky reaffirmed on Wednesday that he was not involved in the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline in September 2022and did not believe that other Ukrainian officials played a role, as several newspapers claimed.
- Ukrainian forces returned to the offensive on the outskirts of Bakhmout, where they recaptured 200 to 1,100 meters, Hanna Maliar, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister, reported on Wednesday. General Oleksandr Syrsky, commander of the country’s army, also reported progress on the Russian flanks.
