Addressing a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Ukraine, which was attended by a Russian representative, Zelensky also joined the US pressure on Iran and North Korea for military support for Russia.
Zelensky, who plans to present Ukraine’s “victory plan” during his official visit to the United States, questioned the veracity of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to freeze the lines of control in Ukraine.
“We know that some [cilvēki] in the world wants to talk to Putin, to maybe hear that he is upset that we are exercising our right to defend our people,” said Zelensky.
He called such views “madness”.
He also said that any end to Russia’s full-scale invasion must be based on the UN Charter, which provides for the sovereignty of member states.
“One day it will be said in this hall that Russia’s war against Ukraine is over – not paused, not forgotten, [bet] truly over,” said Zelensky.
“It will not happen because someone is tired of war, not because someone will have bargained with Putin for something. Russia’s war against Ukraine will end because the UN Charter will work.”
On Thursday, Zelenskiy will meet US President Joe Biden at the White House, who in his address to the UN called for international support for Ukraine until its victory.
Zelensky again promised a second “peace summit” and said he would invite China and India, major powers that have refused to join Western sanctions against Russia imposed over the Ukraine war.
