Ksenia Karelin Accused of Providing Aid to Ukrainian Army
Ksenia Karelin, a US resident, was detained in February while visiting her family in Russia and accused of providing financial assistance to the Ukrainian army. Her lawyer, Mikhail Mushailov, stated, “The prosecutor’s office demanded a 15-year prison sentence in a penal colony under the general regime.”
Karelin’s alleged support for Ukraine came to light after Russia’s invasion in 2022. She reportedly donated approximately $50 to a US-based charity aiding the Ukrainian cause, as reported by US media based on information from her family and employer.
The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) accused Karelin of collecting money that was used to purchase tactical medical supplies, equipment, weapons, and ammunition for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Karelin admitted her guilt during a court hearing in Yekaterinburg on Wednesday. The verdict is expected to be announced next Thursday.
Russia has initiated numerous criminal cases against citizens accused of supporting or collaborating with Ukraine. Karelin, in her early 30s, is among several US citizens and dual citizens facing charges in Russia.
Last week, Russia released three prisoners in a significant exchange with the West, including journalists Evan Gershkovich and Alsa Kurmashev, and former Marine Paul Whelan.
